Photojournalism

7h

The photojournalist is a witness. He is the one who reports, who remembers.

He evidently testifies using images. His testimonies can be shared in two ways. The first being through daily news, wherever and whatever they may be. Or, in the long run, through the creation of a photo series that follow a given theme (in this case, we talk about photo journalism, or in-depth reporting).

While the reporter can not be biased, his point of view can be expressed thanks to the photo angle, and the order he decides to display his photographs in.

The class

To kick off the day, we will talk about photo reporting : its evolution in time, its role in society.

The instructor will suggest 2 or 3 reporting themes, among which one will be chosen for the day by the participants.

The beginning of the afternoon will be dedicated to photojournalism. The instructor will take part in the exercise, all along giving his advice and tips to each participant (how to choose the angle of your shot , what is the perfect timing, etc.)

Once the photojournal is done, the instructor will use the photos he took, to address the question of editing. He will explain the rhythm and coherence choices that lead him to make the final cut.

By the end of the day, a collective look will be carried on all the participants’ works

Photographic equipment

The equipment is naturally very important. Long focal lengths and wide angles are necessary to be able to take various kinds of photographs.

A quality camera lens is recommended, as it allows a large aperture diaphragm, and will allow one to adapt to the different light conditions.

Course

10am-12am : Photojournalists’ history ; 2/3 themes decided by a vote

1pm- 4pm : Shooting

4pm- 6pm : Debriefing session about the participants’ work ; Editing according to the instructor’s guidelines

Key Details

- Each participant should come to the class with a camera of his choosing, one which he is used to in order to make sure no technical limitation will come in the way of taking photographs (as a reminder, we offer courses of introduction to photography, organized in 4 workshops to avoid running into any technical barriers).
