Street photography arises from observing what surrounds us. At the corner of a street, from an encounter or a sudden occurence, a story can be told by photographers. This introductory course to street photography is for amateur photographers who already have a basic technical knowledge of photography (refer to workshops 1 to 4).

Street photography

A city is for a photographer both a training ground for his eyes and a playing area without limits. Street photography implies constant awareness. Just like Gary Winogrand, Henri Cartier-Bresson or Vivian Maier understood, it is about sharpening our visual sense and capturing the human being in his immediate environment, in natural and spontaneous situations.

Street photography relies on rapidity. Spontaneity doesn’t allow the photographer to think long and hard about framing. In this field, anticipation is the key to apprehending things. Another way would be by appealing to your "photographer’s instincts".

Whatever his motivations may be, in order to provide a successful visual history, a photographer ought to have a good technical expertise. For instance, he must know how to use natural light, play with architecture and human presence in its environment, control his movements and framing…

This course will provide you with practical tips and technical advice to capture the essence of a place, a person, an atmosphere… You will be asked to trust your guts and develop your own personal style, while keeping an eye on composition. You will learn about the subtle arts of anticipation and positioning, critical for taking a good snapshot.

"If you can smell the street by looking at the photo, it's a street photograph." Bruce Gilden

Training content

The course begins with a definition of street photography, illustrated by the instructor’s favorite street photographers.

Each participant will then be asked to choose a simple theme (the circle, the color blue, pigeons) that will be used as a main thread  and an exercise for the afternoon’s photo shoot.

This shoot will have you put into practice the morning’s teachings, guided by the instructor that will give you valuable input and a few of his personal tricks as a photographer.

Organized in workshops comprising at most 5 participants, this course will give each one the time to ask questions regarding problems encountered while shooting.

The course will end with a full debriefing of the day and everyone’s work.

Course :

10am-12am : introduction to street photography, definition of everyone’s thematic fields

1pm-4.30pm : photo shoot

4.30pm-6pm : debriefing of the day, appraisals of each other’s work
